Greenleaf ViewComm II: Frame View Explained

VCS Frame View

Explanation

  • The Frame window has a lot of panes that you can open (View menu) to see your protocol packets in various ways.
  • At the top, you can select the way VCS decodes the data--by selecting a Summary (protocol) Layer.
  • Down and to the right, note the NEW Tab Filters, which allow you to experiment in real time or retrospectively (i.e. when viewing a capture file). Tab filters is one of several manifestations of display filters which feature is NEW in ViewComm II.
  • Note: Compare this to the filters in Protocol Navigator View and to the capabilities of the Quick Filters dialog
  • Below that note the Packet Summary Pane - you can scroll through a session and pick a frame to examine. The columns that are displayed in this pane are user configurable. You can select packets based on the criteria of your choice.
  • The Protocol Decode pane shows a tree view of what the chosen protocol decode sees. In the example above, we see an IP packet riding on a PPP frame which itself lies inside the top-level Async PPP frame number 2772.
  • You can correlate this with the corresponding Event Window shown previously. We are told that this is IP version 4, the header length is 5 ... and a lot of additional information about the packet. If you wish to view only certain parts of frames, you can use a VCS Filter (live or viewing captured data).
  • To the right are shown three views of the packet's data -- Binary, Radix (e.g. hex, octal, decimal, etc.), and Character. The optional Event Pane can be used instead of an Event Window if screen real-estate is limited.
  • Note that many functions are available on the menus and toolbars of the Frame Window. As an example, you don't need to leave this Window to set up or choose existing Filter configurations, choose a radix, character set, or protocol. VCS is about choices--your choices.
