The Whole Shebang...Almost!
Here, on a 17" monitor, is about half of what you can see with VCS. There are other
windows we got along without...we're out now shopping for larger monitors. But you can
select which views you want...so your's should work fine.
VCS System Control
This small window puts you in control of the most sophisticated data and protocol analysis system on Earth.
Event Window
An event is a character sent or received, or a special character indicating a state change in a protocol, e.g. start of frame is an event that can be recognized easily--it is represented by a small flag in the display.
Frame Window
The frame window has a number of optional panes. The image shows all of them. Panes include Packet Summary, Protocol Decode, Binary, Radix (e.g. hex, decimal), Character (e.g. ASCII), and Event. If you open the Event pane here you will see a selection of the session that contains the selected packet. Remember, you can have the Event and Frame windows open simultaneously--and even multiples of each!
New! Protocol Navigator
See a list of packets in tree mode; display filters (Filter in, Filter out, named frame filters applied. Pick any number of
packets to view, pick what frames are included in the tree, then open the frame as deeply as you like for any frames. Filters apply to
all packets, but you can probe into each packet as deeply as you wish.

Signals Window
The Signals Window provides yet another valuable view into a serial data link: the modem control and status signal states. In addition to a graphic for each (you can choose which one or ones of the signals you want displayed), you also get a summary of total transitions.

Statistics Window
The Statistics Window is unique in that not only does it let you see statistics of interest, but you can open graphic displays of some features.
First, there are three tabs on this window: Session, Buffer, and Resettable. These let you select the timeframe for which you wish to see statistics.
Statistics displayed are automatically chosen by the VCS system depending upon hardware and system configuration.
In this view, we see summaries of Frames, Characters, and Events--total, DCE, and DTE, Utilization, Characters and Frames per second, Errors, and Frame Sizes.

Statistics Graphs
The Statistics Window contains several icons indicating availability of a graphic display of the data. For instance, in the example Statistics Window pictured

Transmit Window (File)
The Transmit window, available when sourcing (transmitting to a connected DTE) has two modes--send from file or from keyboard.

Transmit Window (Keyboard)
The Transmit window, available when sourcing (transmitting to a connected DTE) has two modes--send from file or from keyboard.

Using the Capture File Viewer Program
Did we forget to mention the Capture File Viewer? It is a separate program
that you can run (even multiple instances of it) independently or along side VCS to see
your choice of views of...more than one capture file, different frames from the same file,
or you can have a capture file open while you're capturing another session! Really cool!
Click on the thumbnail to see a page explaining briefly what we did and how.

Breakout Box View
The Breakout Box is available during live sessions, when capturing to buffer or disk.
It shows the signals in real-time. We artificially highlighted an area; the actual display
does not contain highlighted areas; these are shown in the Signals View.
